Kenya power company say monkey caused nationwide blackout

While the power was off for most of the day in most of Kenya as a result of the monkey in the transformer, for most of Kenya’s residents didn’t even notice the outage.

The blackout lasted more than three hours .

“A monkey climbed on the roof of Gitaru Power Station and dropped onto a transformer tripping it”.

“Our technical teams have been able to restore supply to the affected areas following the outage that resulted from a fault at the Gitaru Power Station”.

Kenya Power said the fault had stopped generation at the station, causing other sources of power to trip.

“The system has since been restored and all our power generating units are operating normally”.

Kenya was left without power on Tuesday after a monkey got into a power station and triggered a nationwide blackout.

The company “regretted” the incident, saying its power installations have electric fencing around them which “keep away marauding wild animals”.

Power was restored nearly four hours later and the monkey survived its adventure, KenGen said. Apparently, in the instance of this widespread outage, the security measures were ineffective, and the company apologized for the security breach via monkey in its notice to its customers.

The disruptions also saw the service industry whose operations rely on the mains electricity grind to a halt. A countrywide power blackout hit businesses on June 7, 2016.
