At least 5 dead after truck hits bicyclists, fire chief confirms

A witness near the scene told WZZM 13’s Phil Dawson the bicyclists are part of a group that goes on weekly rides. “I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through”.

“I’m at a loss to describe the impact to the community from these incidents”, Getting said.

About 30 minutes before the crash, several people called the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, Kalamazoo Township Police Department and the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office to report a pickup truck driving erratically, Getting said. The group included men and women. The driver fled on foot but was captured a short time later.

Witness Markus Eberhard, who often fishes at the location, was walking out of a local store when another person told him to look out. The pickup almost rolled over his foot and before Eberhard could warn the bicyclists they were hit, he said. One was listed in critical condition and the other in fair condition Tuesday night.

Paramedics and fire crews rushed to the scene near a park in Cooper Township early Tuesday evening.

“There is very little I can or will tell you about how exactly this accident happened”, Getting said. More information was expected to be released later Tuesday, dispatchers said.

Cooper Township is south of Grand Rapids.

Getting grew emotional as he spoke about a Kalamazoo community still reeling from a deadly rampage in February where Uber driver Jason Dalton allegedly killed six people and injured two others. He is charged with murder and attempted murder.
