Buggy Update Bricks Lexus Navigation Systems

A posting on YouTube showed the navigation system on a Lexus RX350 SUV starting up, then going to a blank purple screen and restarting. Some Lexus owners have learned that the hard way, thanks to a software update that’s been crashing vehicles’ navigation systems. Lexus owners would have to visit a dealership to obtain a complete fix if the company can not solve the issue via satellite. What’s more, some users are reporting that their radios are also affected, as it uses the same screen that keeps restarting.

The auto brand issued a statement Tuesday night on their Facebook page saying a recent update caused the problems and they are working diligently to fix it.

According to the annual J.D. Power & Associates vehicle dependability study in February this year, Lexus ranked highest in vehicle dependability among all nameplates for a fifth consecutive year. Automakers of all stripes: Please, hire more software engineers, or at least teach them that beta stage isn’t good enough to push into our cars.

Owners of the luxurious vehicles have also made complaints in California, through Twitter. However, it can only be repaired in the service department. Only recently produced vehicles, perhaps just 2014, 2015, and 2016 models, seem to have been affected. Twitter user Dr. Jay Trotter claims to have received a reset of the navigation system from his dealership, but that it may only be a temporary fix.
