He is the one that threw a 99 miles per hour pitch into the back of Manny Machado, he is the one who threw inside to him several times during a previous at bat, he is the one who hit Machado and Chris Davis during a game back in 2015 and he is the one who has been in trouble because of him hitting players in the past intentionally. “It just hit my insane bone”, Cuthbert said. “Our guys have been good at that”.
Three innings later in the fifth, Ventura summoned all of the velocity he could find and bounced a 99 m.p.h. heater, the highest he’d hit on the radar gun all evening, off Machado’s ribs.
Unfortunately for those who were satisfied to see Machado say “enough is enough” with Ventura, baseball can’t let him get away with throwing actual punches.
Ventura actually hit Machado in a game last September, but whether that played a role in last night’s prelude isn’t clear.
“I don’t regret anything”, Machado told The Baltimore Sun afterwards. Like I said before, I don’t care how well you pitch down there, when you’ve had some challenges up here, you don’t really gain all the answers just from going down there. You don’t think in that situation. “You just keep showing up every day and keep plugging away”.
“I don’t think (a suspension) should be in order”.
To put things bluntly, we’ve seen this crap from Yordano Ventura before. “Everyone knows what kind of player (Machado) is”. Salvador Perez came in and grabbed Machado from behind to try and pull him off of his pitcher, and separates the two.
Screw it, defend yourself. “It’s part of the game, reactions fly”.
The Orioles moved into the major league lead with 88 home runs on the season. The rest of the team seemed agitated too, which leads me to believe that Ventura could be seeing either a demotion soon or possibly even a trade. The Orioles offense jumped all over the Royals’ starter and by the end of the inning Ventura found himself in a 4-0 hole. The Orioles bashed the Royals 9-1 and on most nights that would be the main story. Adrian Beltre scored from first base after reaching on a fielder’s choice.
The Pirates also won the first game 3-1 behind seven scoreless innings from Jon Niese. He crushed a 3-2 pitch out on to Eutaw Street for his first homer this season.

When the merciful ending finally came, the the Royals had allowed four homers and the club had lost for a sixth time in six days.
