Mercedes-Benz Working On Competitor For Tesla Model X

Mercedes-Benz will debut an all-new battery electric sport utility concept vehicle at the Paris Motor Show in late September.

Claimed to be Benz’s first “truly dedicated electric vehicle” the new zero-emission SUV is claimed to provide “a clear insight” into the production vehicle’s external and internal design, says the mystery Mercedes insider – hinting the concept will be close to the production vehicle that will follow.

The show auto is now being developed and undergoing construction at a Mercedes facility on the outskirts of Stuttgart and should resemble a near production-ready vehicle.

Tesla has captured our imagination (if not our practicality) with the world’s first all-electric SUV, the Model X. Mercedes-Benz has only offered three such vehicles up to this point, two under the Mercedes-Benz brand (the B-Class and the A-Class), and one inside the smart lineup (the fortwo electric drive), which is now discontinued.

The new concept which is now being constructed is said to provide “a clear insight” into the external appearance, interior appointments, technical layout and overall dimensions of the production model. A Mercedes official told Autocar that “We’ve created a whole new look that takes into consideration the unique properties of electric vehicles”.

The vehicle will reportedly give a clear insight into what direction Mercedes will take as it develops a range of electric cars.

As a means of enforcing its future EV plans, Mercedes-Benz’s Ola Källenius has revealed that the carmaker is also considering an entry for the all-electric FIA Formula E racing series.
