Mathura violence: SP govt hand-in-glove with land mafia, says BJP

Lucknow:A police sub-inspector and a Superintendent of Police were among 21 killed in a clash between police and encroachers during an anti-encroachment drive in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura, officials said on Friday.

He said the state government was aware of the land being encroached by SBSS, yet they sent police there with little preparation, adding that the SP would pay dearly for this in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.

BJP MP Hema Malini, who is facing flak for sharing pictures of her film shoot as violence erupted in her constituency, also sought to target the Akhilesh Yadav government over the incident, saying it needs to look into the law and order situation.

More than 3,000 members of the cult attacked almost a thousand police personnel with arms after the latter tried to evict them.

Chaudhary said more than 100 people were injured during clashes with the police. Clashes between the police and the mob took place when the former made a decision to check the site on Thursday.

Yadav, too, appeared to be among those who were killed in the fire and sustained burns, the police said.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted on Friday: “Spoke to UP CM Shri Akhilesh Yadav and reviewed the situation in Mathura”.

While 250 people have been detained for their involvement in the incident, the city continues to be tense even as heavy police reinforcement has been deployed in the violence-hit region.
