Detroit police: 14-year-old fatally shot; boy, 13, charged

The boy was with the 14-year-old, Frederick Austin, and three other youths Tuesday night on Radnor Street when he allegedly discharged the gun, the Prosecutor’s Office said.

A 13-year-old Detroit boy has been charged with involuntary manslaughter for shooting a 14-year-old boy behind a vacant house on the city’s east side. Craig tells WJBK-TV that it wasn’t immediately known where the gun came from and whether the shooting was accidental or if it followed a dispute.

Authorities have charged two men and a woman with murder and kidnapping in the abduction and killing of a 13-year-old Detroit boy. He also faces charges of careless discharge causing death and felony firearm.

The suspect appeared in juvenile court Wednesday.

In another case, in Redford Township, a 10-year-old boy “found an unsecured handgun belonging to his mother and shot himself, injuring his hand”, according to Maria Miller, spokeswoman for the Prosecutor’s Office.

Authorities allege a 13-year-old Detroit boy was abducted, beaten and choked to death after the teen picked up money dropped by one of the men now charged. Coleman was charged with kidnapping last weekend. Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy says her staff wasn’t “running rogue” and trying to railroad Davontae Sanford.

It is every person’s responsibility “to try at every bend and turn to save children from themselves, literally”, Worthy said.
