May 22 storm produced 8 tornadoes in Big Spring

Tornado warnings remain in effect in parts of Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Iowa and Missouri with the possibility of “couple tornadoes”, large hail up to two inches in diameter and wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.

The tornado in Dickinson County destroyed eight homes with heavy damage to an additional 15-20 homes and farmsteads.

Western Kansas survey crews took advantage of calm conditions Wednesday to assess damage from severe weather that swept through the Great Plains, and the National Weather Service said more storms could be on the horizon.

CHAPMAN, Kan. (AP) — Severe weather spawning numerous tornadoes roiled large stretches of Kansas for a second day Thursday, prompting residents to anxiously watch the skies but causing only scattered damage in rural areas and no injuries or deaths.

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management staff in the State Emergency Operations Center in Topeka continues to monitor storm activities across Kansas.

Besides damaged homes, White says US 50 was temporarily closed because a tractor-trailer was toppled in the storm.

Officials and residents search for a boy who went missing on Tuesday, May 24, in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Omitt says it looks like “the heart” of the tornado was just about a mile south of the town of Chapman at one point.

The same storm system produced other tornadoes around the area.

The twister that hit June 11, 2008, tore a path of destruction six blocks wide through the town. No injuries were reported. Two officers searching the area pulled the boy to safety after hearing his cries for help. Police Cpl. Jason Chester tells television station KAIT that the boy said he clung to a pole.
