Sanders goes to Washington to meet with Obama

President Obama on Thursday officially endorsed Hillary Clinton to be his successor, days after she clinched the historic status of being the first woman to become the presumptive presidential nominee of a major party.

Sanders’ campaign spokesman Michael Briggs had little to say about the conversation with the president, saying the men discussed “how we can all work together to create an economy that works for all people and not just the 1 percent”.

Although the two were once political rivals, during the 2008 race for the Democratic presidential nomination, they came together in 2009 when Clinton accepted Obama’s invitation to serve as the United States’ secretary of state.

In his video endorsement, Mr. Obama emphasized Mrs. Clinton’s government experience, from participating in the decision to conduct the commando raid that killed Osama bin Laden in 2011, to guiding the country’s diplomacy.

“Hillary isn’t running for the third term of President Obama”, Tanden said, “but obviously they share core principles”.

In the past, Ms Warren has accused Ms Clinton of abandoning her support for stronger bankruptcy legislation to try to appease Wall Street. He was going to do that regardless, but the fact that Clinton’s running against Trump will likely lead Obama to take an even more active role in the campaign.

“I know how hard this job can be”, he said.

“I am concerned about us doing the hard nuts-and-bolts work of turning out people to vote”, Obama said, “particularly young people, particularly low-income people who oftentimes feel forgotten and are still stressed”.

Donald Trump had some thoughts on that endorsement.

“I am pretty good at arithmetic, and I know that the fight in front of us is a very, very steep fight”, Sanders said. Clinton is counting on Sanders’ supporters to help her defeat Trump. He has vowed to campaign through the June 14 primary election in the nation’s capital.

A week after securing the Democratic nomination for president, Hillary Clinton plans to visit Green Bay with President Barack Obama on Wednesday.

“He has said that he’s certainly going to do everything he can to defeat Trump”, Clinton said of Sanders in an Associated Press interview.

The endorsement went public after Obama met with rival Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. The Vermont senator planned to meet with Vice President Joe Biden, too.

Thursday’s endorsement matters in that it cements his allegiance-and further signals that top Democrats think it is time for Sanders to abandon his campaign. Bernie Sanders at the White House earlier Thursday and the senator from Vermont indicated he is preparing to exit the Democratic nominating battle.
