West Nile virus found in mosquitoes around Tulsa in health department traps

“The Zika virus seems to dominate the headlines right now, but at this time there have been no locally transmitted cases of Zika in the contiguous United States”, said Bernard Dindy, Tulsa Health Department environmental health services program manager. It has strong public-health surveillance and anticipated Zika’s arrival, unlike Brazil, where the virus spread unnoticed for months.

Almost 80 percent of people infected with the virus will have no symptoms.

Thus far, 133 Zika cases have been reported in Florida, not including pregnant women, of which there have been 38 cases.

“We all have a responsibility to protect”, she said, adding that mosquitoes could carry other serious diseases like West Nile and malaria.

Symptoms of Zika are often mild. Zika is linked to a birth defect called microcephaly, a severe brain defect. The 618 Zika cases in the continental USA have been acquired while travelers were in other countries where the virus is more aggressive or through sexual transmission in 11 cases after infected individuals returned home. “People tell us they want us to pay for thing, so we paid for it”.

The Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) today reported the fourth confirmed case of the Zika virus (Zika) in the county. Though the CDC is now monitoring the pregnant women in the United States who have been infected, no one knows the likelihood of Zika transmission if a mother is infected, according to CBS News.

The Zika virus got put under the microscope in Research Triangle Park Tuesday.
