‘Braveheart’ screenwriter working on ‘The Passion’ sequel

The blockbuster religious biopic from director Mel Gibson is getting a follow-up from Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace.

As The Passion has the crucifixion of Jesus Christ pretty well covered, the sequel will mostly focus on the resurrection story and tell it in-depth. From there, we can only imagine where he’ll go, evading the authorities, destroying the carefully developed leper colony economy of ancient Israel, and waging a running battle against one of his dad’s old friends. The screenwriter spilled the news that Mel Gibson and himself are working on a sequel script dealing with the resurrection of Christ because it’s apparently becoming too hard to keep under wraps.

“I always wanted to tell this story”, Wallace told THR.

Wallace most recently directed and co-wrote the faith-based film, Heaven Is for Real, starring Greg Kinnear and Thomas Haden Church.

“The Passion is the beginning and there’s a lot more story to tell”, he added. Even Passion of the Christ.

Mel Gibson’s reps are declining any comment about Passion of the Christ 2 at this time. Released in 2004 by Newmarket Films, the movie was an instant smash hit, taking in $612 million worldwide on just a $30 million budget.

Said buzz stems from Gibson’s appearance at Liberty University last month for a screening of his upcoming Hacksaw Ridge, where he expressed interest in making a sequel to The Passion but neither confirmed nor denied that anything was being done.
