China leads resistance to India joining nuclear export club
A few weeks back, a key US Senator, Ed Markey, had warned that enabling India to join the NSG would cause a never ending nuclear race in South Asia and termed Obama Administration’s policy in this regard as risky and unnecessary. This appreciation of Prime Minister’s address was a felicitation of his dynamic leadership and acknowledgement of visionary leadership by the whole world, Mr Gao felt.

You have supplied critical core components and performed primary system integration for INS Arihant, India’s first nuclear submarine. A decision on India is, however, not expected before an NSG plenary meeting in Seoul on June 20. He added that dialogue is the only way to solution of all outstanding issues between Pakistan and India. Thus, Islamabad can play spoiler for New Delhi while appearing to push its interests in earnest.
The opposition against India’s entry into the NSG also hails from the fact that it would infuriate its archrival Pakistan, who is also vying for an NSG seat. If the NSG countries make an exception for India, they should do the same for Pakistan which has unblemished record.
To another question, he said Pakistan and India should improve bilateral ties for regional stability. “The NSG is an important part of the worldwide nuclear non-proliferation regime which is based on the cornerstone of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT)”.
According to an interesting study of export controls and dual-use goods by Ian J Stewart, senior research fellow at King’s College, London, Pakistan has the ability to manufacture or produce heavy water, nuclear manipulators, marraging steel, and zirconium.
The letter, shared with Dawn, expresses Pakistan’s willingness to accept the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards on all foreign supplied nuclear reactors and nuclear materials similar to the current IAEA safeguards in place on all of Pakistan’s civilian nuclear facilities. When the worldwide community is assured of Islamabad’s bonafide intentions, it may consider extending civil nuclear cooperation without necessarily opening the doors to the NSG.
India also requested to join the NSG although its nuclear tests, expecting that it would be recognised as a nuclear power once a member. The opposing countries stress that India’s inclusion into the NSG would seriously undermine nuclear proliferation as India has not signed the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Politics must teach its practitioners how to utter the baldest lies with a straight face. The father of its nuclear weapons programme, nuclear scientist A.Q. Khan, ran an illicit network for years that sold nuclear secrets to countries including North Korea and Iran.
