Carlos Martinez finished off a rough month of May on a strong note, tossing eight shutout innings as the Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-0, Monday afternoon at Miller Park.

Garcia (4-4, 3.47 ERA) entered Friday’s game against Washington coming off a pair of ineffective starts in which he allowed 15 hits and eight runs in 7 1/3 innings.

Facing the Cardinals today, Davies tossed what was arguably the best game by a starting pitcher this season. He allowed a leadoff home run to pinch-hitter Brandon Moss, but retired the next three batters to get the Brewers the win. Jeremy Jeffress pitched the 9th inning, giving up a solo home run before retiring the next 3 Cardinals, in the 3 to 1 victory. A pair of solo homers by the Nationals victimized Leake, who has surrendered four runs over 28 innings in his last four turns.

Tyler Saladino hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning and Chicago rallied from an early four-run deficit, stopping a seven-game slide Tuesday night with a 6-4 victory over the New York Mets. St. Louis does have some very solid pieces in place still and a respectable rotation but they don’t seem to have the same swagger we have come to expect over the years and they could very well miss out on the playoffs altogether this season if they can’t go on a run soon. Carpenter also scored when Holliday hit into a double play in the seventh.

Against the Atlanta Braves last Thursday, Wily Peralta picked up his third win of the year after pitching 5.1 pretty solid innings. The Cards aren’t quite having the starts that many expected at the beginning of the season and with the Pirates and Cubs taking over as the top two powers in the division we could very well see the decline of the Cards this season despite sitting three games above the.

After tallying up 16 runs in the first two games of the week-day series, the St. Louis offense went cold Wednesday against Zach Davies and the Brewers.

LINEUP INTRIGUE: Mike Matheny did not seize the opportunity to give catcher Yadier Molina a day off ahead of an off-day to refresh him during his notable offensive downturn. He is 0-2 with a 7.53 ERA in three career starts against Philadelphia. Ryan Braun and Chris Carter each had RBI singles. He is 5-0 in his last seven games.

No, the Phillies are not World Series contenders, but this is the first series in a stretch of 34 games before the All-Star break where the Brewers will play 30 against teams with.
