Broadway Carpool Karaoke wows

The 70th annual Tony Awards, hosted by James Corden, will broadcast live from the Beacon Theatre in New York City on June 12 at 8 pm ET on CTV. “I’m at your service, sir”. A Tony victor himself, he opted to prepare for the gig by inviting a slew of Broadway stars to drop by The Late Late Show for another segment of Carpool Karaoke. “That was the most Broadway response to hearing an opening chord”, Corden said before they burst out singing. The two discusses the nerves surrounding this year’s Tony Awards.

While en route, the pair encounters other Broadway stars-Jane Krakowski, Audra McDonald and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. And of course, he had to have Pulitzer Prize-winning, MacArthur Genius Grant-receiving Lin-Manuel Miranda on, whose musical Hamilton set a Tonys record this year with 16 nominations. To answer that question, we’d probably need to actually score tickets to “Hamilton“, but we’re honestly just glad Russell Crowe isn’t singing.

Unfortunately, Corden said that it took time for the idea to gain traction with artists. The opening strains of “Seasons of Love” from “Rent” make everyone in the vehicle go, “Awww” and then they sing together, throwing in harmonies and all sorts of goodness, and it feels like all will be right with the world.

And it all came down to Mariah Carey, who was the first to acquiesce to Corden’s self-professed “ridiculous” request. “That’s what they want more than anything-belt out a few show tunes”.

“Even if you’re in NY, some people are paying $1,000 for one seat to see Hamilton, but yet for one night in your living room, you’re going to get to see the cast of Hamilton perform and so many other incredible casts perform that night”.

The roadtrip buddies sang songs from popular musicals such as Rent, Jersey Boys and Les Miserables finale song, One Day More, as they drove around Manhattan.
