San Diego Padres blow double-digit lead to Seattle Mariners, lose 16-13

The Seattle Mariners struggled to explain how they erased a 10-run deficit in just two innings to stun the San Diego Padres 16-13 Thursday night. His comments came a day after James Shields allowed 10 runs in 2 2/3 innings of a 16-4 loss at Seattle.

Thanks to a seven-run fifth inning, the Padres took a 12-2 lead Thursday and appeared to be on their way to an easy win. But the surprising Mariners have mounted an astonishing comeback, nearly reminiscent of the legendary 2001 13-12 comeback that came against Seattle by the Indians.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the 10-run deficit was the largest ever overcome by the Mariners in team history and it also marks the biggest blown lead in a loss by the Padres.

The silver lining? The Padres, who were shut out in their first three games of the season, have 27 runs in their last two games. Alexei Ramirez singled and Adam Rosales jumped on a 1-1, 97 miles per hour fastball left over the middle of the plate for a two-run homer.
