A spokesperson for the UK Coastguard has just said: “UK Coastguard can confirm that debris has been found in the search for the missing microlight aircraft”.
The flight carrying two people took off from City of Derry airport on Thursday and had been tracking towards Stranraer in Scotland.
A yacht which had joined the search teams found the debris north of Glenarm at around 3pm this afternoon.
James Instance, duty controller with UK Coastguard said, ‘The weather has caused problems for the search operation.
The Irish Coast Guard’s helicopter “Rescue 116” joined the search along with a United Kingdom rescue helicopter from Prestwick and local coastguard teams.
Coastguard and RNLI lifeboats from Scotland and Northern Ireland were also involved in the operation in the North Channel.
The UK Coastguard in Belfast, assisted by the Irish Coastguard’s Dublin-based Rescue 116 helicopter, searched until dark last night for the micro-light aircraft which had two people on board.
The microlight was transiting the Northern Ireland coastline when it went missing.
“We may send further resources as the search widens”.
The search will resume once foggy conditions clear.
