This new scale can track your cardiovascular health

Users can only see their Pulse Wave Velocity, as well as a variety of other health information by logging on to the app. Rather than simply showing users their own health data, however, the app curates suggestions for users on how they can work on the specific areas measured by the scale.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the scale is the use of Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) measurements, a key indicator of cardiac health associated with hypertension. The stiffer the arteries, the more quickly blood moves through one’s body – and a low PWV indicates more flexible arteries as well as a lower blood pressure. The goal helps you aspire to greatness, and the Health Mate app coaches you with encouraging messages and tips for continuing your journey toward a healthier you.

To measure body composition, Body Cardio uses bioelectrical impedance, a technique that determines the body’s percentage of fat, muscle, water and bone mass based on the resistance of body tissues to the flow of a small electrical signals.

The Health app, Health Mate is free, and syncs data after every use of the scale.

Apple apparently loved the scale so much it’s available exclusively at Apple Stores across the US starting today for $179.99.

Two strips of robust plastic along the bottom of a flat aluminum base means you’re not going to have to fuss with scale foot adjustments. However, the main new measurement is the “pulse wave velocity” (PVW), or speed at which blood circulation takes place within the body. The Body doesn’t include Pulse Wave Velocity, but does however include the majority of other fitness tracking features included in the Body Cardio. So it will track your weight, body fat and BMI.

“It’s the most advanced product we’ve ever made and the product that most represents Withings’ DNA”, co-founder Eric Carreel tells Engadget”. That allows it to work on any surface, whether it be a carpet or hardwood floor. But if you’re concerned with your health (not just your weight), you probably need to glance at one every once in a while. “If you see blinking triangles in any corner of the display, that’s the scale’s way of telling you to center yourself and lean away from those corners to get a more balanced, accurate measurement”, according to a recent The Verge report.

But the good thing is, you don’t have to worry about keeping the device near a power source – the Body Cardio has a long-life battery that will last for around 12 months on a single charge.
