The Marlins won the game, but might have lost a great deal more. Thus, Kennedy will get the nod in Friday’s opener, his second consecutive start against the Marlins.

Kennedy’s wife, Allison, went into labor with their fourth child yesterday morning.

Fernandez is 15-0 in his career at Marlins Park. Daughter Evelyn Nicole was born during the game. “That’s all I can say”.

“The security guard from Miami told me, ‘I’ve never seen anything like this”. Kennedy surrendered a home run in the first inning but eventually settled down-thanks to the newest member of his family.

“(The Padres) were able to eliminate other pitches and just (wait for fastballs)”, Jennings said of Urena’s issues. “I’m out here on a big league mound, and you’ve got to step it up….” But once that occurred, there is no way you’re going to leave a guy like that with that special of an arm out there.

Kennedy came out with a 3-2 lead and received hugs and high-fives from teammates.

“I was just trying to get on base”, he said, with first base coach Jose Valentin interpreting.

Kennedy stuck around and watched the Padres score five runs in the 11th.

He plans to rejoin the Padres next week. The fact of the matter is, we had a shot today to win and kept the team in the game…. But he was stranded when Fernandez struck out Shields, center fielder Will Venable flew out to shallow right and third baseman Yangervis Solarte struck out.Fernandez also worked around a two-out, two-base error by first baseman Justin Bour in the sixth, striking out Norris on his final pitch of the day. Venable singled for the second time in the inning, driving in another run.

“We did a pretty good job of taking what they gave us”, Murphy said.

Brandon Maurer (7-3) pitched an inning in relief for the win. With one on and out in in the ninth, shortstop Alexi Amarista hit a two-run homer, averting a shutout and tying the game. “It was a big moment in the game”.

“It was just a really mad day”, San Diego Padres starter Ian Kennedy said in what is the understatement of the year.

Padres: RHP Tyson Ross (7-8, 3.38) goes Monday when San Diego visits RHP Wily Peralta (2-5, 3.90) and the Milwaukee Brewers.

Shields (8-4, 3.77 ERA) won his first seven decisions, including four in a row on the road, but has recorded only one victory in his last 10 starts and is seeking his first road win since May 24.

Marlins: RHP Jose Urena (1-4) benefits from the Marlins’ recent trades as he was recalled from Triple-A and will start Saturday. Additionally, the Red Sox are 1-4 in his last five starts following a quality outing in his last start.
