Most picky eating harmless, but it can signal emotional woes

Her family’s situation is far from uncommon.
People tend to think of picky eating as a cute quirk that kids outgrow once they realize the delicious magic of stinky foods like Brie and kalamata olives and asparagus that don’t necessarily appeal to the infantile palate.
Based on the child’s eating habits, the researchers labeled them as normal, moderate, or severe picky eaters, also called selective eaters.
According to lead researcher Dr Nancy Zucker, who is the associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at Duke University School of Medicine, “The children we’re talking about aren’t just misbehaving kids who refuse to eat their broccoli”.
The study was published Monday in the journal Pediatrics. No studies had looked in depth at the longer term effects of selective eating during childhood, so Zucker studied 917 children two to almost six years old who were enrolled in an anxiety study. Severe selective eaters have two times higher risk of increase in depression or social anxiety than moderate selective eaters. Those landing in the severe range were more than twice as likely to have a diagnosable psychiatric disorder, such as depression or anxiety, and twice as likely to have behavior problems outside of home.
This story is about a small percentage of kids like Corey Fader, who literally only ate four or five foods growing up.
He also remarked that conflict between parents and children who are picky eaters do not solve the problem and does not make children give up their habits.
“These are just sensitive kids”. This can be something bigger than just selective eating.
Symptoms most common in moderately choosey children were separation anxiety and attention deficit disorder.
“We do now know that what happens very early actually does have potential lifelong implications on willingness to try new foods and eating”, Dr. Jana said. Such children can find those sensations overwhelming, she said.
Some children may benefit from therapy, which may include demystifying foods that cause anxiety through exposure. “Are they having other associated problems? So eventually you slowly get the child more comfortable with the sensation and smell and taste of the chicken”. Both doctors and parents should use new tools in order to deal with this problem Zucker added.
She has treated many children with this problem.
