A blog post written in March by someone identifying himself as Sarkar asserted that Klug “cleverly stole all my code and gave it (to) another student” and “made me really sick”.

School records show that Mainak Sarkar, 38, was enrolled at the school from 2001 to 2003, The Shorthorn reports.

A heartfelt tribute was held Thursday evening for Professor William Klug, the husband and father murdered by one of his own graduate students on the UCLA Campus.

Sarkar, a former UCLA student, shot dead a woman at her home in Minnesota before he drove nearly 2,000 miles (3,200 km) to the school and killed Klug, police said.

Residents of an east Indian industrial town were shocked Friday to recognize the face of a man they remember as a diligent student as the person who allegedly shot a UCLA engineering professor before killing himself in the USA state of California.

Reportedly, Sarkar had also killed his ex-girlfriend Ashley Hasti in Minnesota a day before the UCLA shooting. “I know Sarkar, our suspect, had issues with his professors that were known to them, but I don’t think that is cause for somebody to believe they’re going to be a homicide target”, Beck said.

He murdered Klug in the engineering building before killing himself, police said. Sarkar had a “kill list” with multiple names that included professor Bill Klug, Hasti who was found dead in a Minneapolis suburb and another UCLA professor who was not harmed, a law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press.

“Apparently he’s harbored those feelings over the past three years since his graduation” but investigators hadn’t found any “trigger event” that would explain why he chose to kill now, Los Angeles police Capt. William Hayes said.

UCLA officials said they will review all campus safety procedures.

Hasti was found dead early on Thursday morning of multiple gunshot wounds, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office said in a statement on Friday.

The gas apparently was there so Sarkar didn’t have to stop for fuel on his trip from Minnesota, where he killed his estranged wife some days ago.

Beck says the woman was found shot dead in her home in a nearby Minnesota town.

He later got an under-graduate degree in aerospace engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology – Kharagpur and then went to the United States where he earned a Master’s degree at Stanford University.

“We believe he went there to kill two faculty of UCLA”, Beck said.

At his house, they found the “kill list”.

“There is no good reason for this”, Beck said. “I don’t know what happened to make him do this”.

“He was a very brilliant student, meritorious student, I should say. Be careful about whom you trust”, he wrote. “The second member was off campus”.

She remembers Sarkar as “very well behaved”.

Colleagues and friends described Klug, 39, as a kind, devoted family man and teacher who coached youth baseball in his adopted hometown of El Segundo and didn’t appear to have conflicts with anyone.
