‘Hamilton’ musical tickets going for jaw-dropping US$6000

If the primary motivation behind the new record-setting ticket price for Hamilton was to depress the secondary sale market and undermine scalpers – less than a decade after Broadway industry leaders supported an end to caps on resale markups, helping pave the way to the current scenario – here’s a thought.

As far as musicals go, the real nail-biter at this year’s Tony Awards ceremony is not whether “Hamilton” wins a bunch of prizes.

Indeed, most of the special, hosted by James Corden, will be devoted to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s mega-smash musical about American’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton.

While the musical is not on Netflix, the historical musical will be headed to Chicago later in 2016 after a successful Broadway circuit. This is partially due to the fact that Hamilton is sung-through, but mostly to do with the pace of the show. But if you’re planning a drinking game designed around how many references there are to “Hamilton”, well, prepare to be very drunk within minutes. Maybe Netflix will bring Hamilton to the service in another Netflix original drama or when Hamilton is turned into a television show inspired by the play by a cable company.

No, it’s because “Hamilton” deserves them.

Sunday’s Tonys will be presented by James Corden, host ofThe Late Late Show (CBS will also broadcast the event).

And, some Broadway favorites are back, Jessie Mueller for “Waitress”, Laura Benanti for “She Loves Me”, and returning for a 6th nomination Danny Burstein for “Fiddler on The Roof”.

Hamilton is gearing up to have an epic Tony Awards this Sunday.

If the producers figured out a way to make that available on DVD/Blu-ray, or via iTunes, or via a Fathom movie experience across the country…let’s just say the stars, creator, and producers of Hamilton could probably get even bigger paychecks that include residuals.

But demand has not abated and, if “Hamilton” somehow managed to squeeze the pros out completely, individuals still would have plenty of incentive to buy more tickets than needed and pay for a nice vacation with the proceeds. Voters could go with either Miranda, who plays Hamilton, or co-star Leslie Odom Jr., who gives a stunning performance as Aaron Burr. The record for most wins by a single production is held by The Producers, which won 12 in 2001.

The telecast will offer performances from 10 shows, including one by Gloria Estefan and the cast of “On Your Feet!”. “Cynthia Erivo in The Color Purple is such a standout moment for me”, he said.

Zachary Levi, best known for playing the title role in the TV series “Chuck”, is making a worthy Broadway debut as a starry-eyed romantic in Scott Ellis’s vibrant revival of “She Loves Me”.
