Participants included cancer survivors, Boy Scouts, local business owners and high school students.

Elma – On Friday May 20th, 15 teams and 174 participants raised $38,753.83 for the American Cancer Society.

I want to applaud the survivors and caregivers that participated in the opening lap and the survivor recognition.

There was also entertainment by students, raffles and field events like a tic-tac-toe relay race, a human chessboard and water balloon toss.

The event will continue through the night to raise funds for cancer research.

Relay for life is not an actual relay, but an event where teams and individuals camp out and take turns walking or running around a track or path to raise money.

Last year’s event raised about $82,000, but Rioux says this year, they’re already close to hitting that mark.

Eleven other communities in CT will hold Relay for Life events this Saturday, including Ridgefield and New Milford.
