Michael Jace was sentenced to 40 years in prison Friday for murdering his wife.
Jace waited in their home in the 5400 block of Brynhurst Avenue and when his wife arrived, he shot her once in the back, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
April’s mother Kay Henry shook her head in disgust and stormed off the courtroom, saying she didn’t want to listen to “this sh**”.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to Ms. Jace and her family. The final shots were delivered in a hallway of the couple’s home, within sight of their sons, who were aged 8 and 5 at the time.
Prosecutor Tannaz Mokayef told jurors that Jace fired a revolver that required him to pull a heavy trigger several times.
Jace told police that he initially meant to take his own life.
“Then my dad said, ‘If you like running, run to heaven, and then he shot her”, Nehemiah Jace told jurors.
Jace’s lawyer told jurors that there was no evidence that Jace was brewing or plotting the demise of his wife of nine years, and that the prosecution had “oversold this case” by pursuing a first-degree murder conviction. In court, they also acknowledged that Jace admitted the shooting but argued that the shooting was not planned.
His father-in-law also called 911 as he drove to his daughter’s home after receiving a message from Jace about the shooting. Mokayef said. “Where else is heaven?”
‘And he’s right, ‘ she added.
Jace’s attorney did not respond to a request for comment after the sentencing hearing. How can you do that?April Jace, 40, was a financial aid counselor at Biola University.
