Curtain goes up on Broadway’s Tony Awards starring new host James Corden

NEW YORK, United States-Tickets to the smash-hit Broadway musical “Hamilton” are going for record-breaking prices-skyrocketing to more than $6,000 apiece.

But if all of this translates to more young eyeballs for the Tonys telecast on Sunday, it would be the exception, not the rule.

Also competing for the Best Musical Tony this year are Bright Star, School of Rock, Shuffle Along and Waitress.

Miranda-who wrote and composed the musical-announced June 2 he would perform the lead, Alexander Hamilton, for the last time, taking a break to devote time to other projects.

Will you be tuning in live to watch the 2016 Tony Awards? Will Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical break the record for most Tony wins ever, now held jointly by “Billy Elliot” and “The Producers”, which both won twelve Tonys in their respective years?

The 26-year-old, a fan favorite who is engaged to fellow stage standout Steven Pasquale, joins the blockbuster musical’s creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, her co-star, and perhaps others, in departing after July 9, when numerous original company members’ contracts expire.

James Corden is really nervous to host tonight’s Tony Awards (8 p.m. on CBS).

Having reinvented “The Late Late Show” as an engine for viral bits of musical comedy and segments like “Carpool Karaoke” and “Drop the Mic”, Corden was brimming with confidence (and a vodka with cranberry juice) recently before beginning the intense preparations for the Tonys.

Who is nominated for the 2016 Tony Awards? “That’s one of the most important things about the early federal government, and this show has a whole song about it!” Subscribers who renew their subscription for the 2017-2018 season will be able to guarantee their seats for the premiere St. Louis engagement of HAMILTON before tickets become available to the general public.

“The Humans” looks poised to win Best Play, as well as prizes for its featured performers, Reed Birney and Jayne Houdeyshell. Momentum is with “She Loves Me” since it opened this spring, but “The Color Purple” is also greatly admired due to the remarkable Broadway debut of British powerhouse Cynthia Erivo as Celie and director John Doyle’s superbly reconceived vision.

In the categories covering acting in plays, my votes would go to Mark Strong in “A View From the Bridge” for best actor and Sophie Okonedo in “The Crucible” for best actress.

The online ubiquity of these segments has helped “The Late Late Show” thrive in an intensely competitive environment in which more than a dozen late-night series vie for TV ratings and internet clicks.

“This is my ninth Broadway show and I had never done a show that had had Latin themes in it that dealt with the Latin culture – and I’m Colombian”, Trujillo said in a phone interview from NY.
