Kevin Smith’s Mallrats Sequel Headed To Television

It looks like Kevin Smith’s “Mallrats” sequel will not be coming to theaters after all. “A couple months ago we started reconfiguring the idea of doing “Mallrats” not as a film as a series”. The film only raked in $2 million at the box office, a point that made Smith initially say, “I don’t know if the world is screaming out for this”. “I went and directed an episode of The “Flash, ‘ and when I went up there, it was kind of a weird game changer for my career”, said Smith”.

Smith’s latest film, “Yoga Hosers” stars his daughter Harley Quinn Smith and Johnny Depp’s daughter Lily-Rose Melody Depp as yoga-loving Canadian high schoolers doing battle with Nazi bratwursts. Last May, the filmmaker said that the sequel will be called MallBrats, and that he has a completed script, with another report from September revealing that shooting would begin in January 2016.

Deadline has reached out to both Universal and MGM for comment. Hopefully, the continuation of the Mallrats franchise can keep the magic and fun of the film going and be a victor for Smith as well as Rooker. In two separate photos he posted on his personal Twitter account weeks after finishing the Mallrats sequel’s script past year, Smith, Michael Rooker, Jason Mewes, Stan Lee and Shannen Doherty all confirmed to being committed to doing the sequel.

“Speaking of the process Smith explained that the script was submitted to Universal by his agent but was ultimately met with discouraging news, “[His agent said] Well, apparently Universal has never let a catalogue title go, any title they own, they’ve retained. I can’t say who it is yet since we don’t have a finalized deal yet. Smith did not confirm which actors from the original would be reprising roles in the TV sequel, but the Clerks creator has been leaving hints all over social media. In pace of a big screen continuation, Smith is now developing Mallrats 2 as a ten episode event series.

Prior to announcing Exton’s mall as the his filming location, Smith touted Delaware County’s Granite Run Mall as the Mallbrats backdrop.
