Nelson filed legislation to authorize an additional $130 million a year grant for local mosquito-control boards working to eliminate the species of mosquitoes responsible for spreading the Zika virus. In outbreak areas, the main defense is to avoid mosquito bites.
Affected territories reported 191 more Zika cases last week, a lot of them in Puerto Rico, boosting the number of local infections to 1,301.
The risk assessment assumes that European Aedes-mosquitoes have the same potential to spread the Zika virus as their South-, Middle-and North American counterparts.
But given the size of Florida “there will not be enough inspectors to cover the territory”, Espinal told AFP.
Although Zika has appeared in all but a handful of US states, all known cases so far are travel-related, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
“This is a job that has to be done not only by the health service, but by the community”. He stated that every precaution has been taken to prevent the spread of the virus, adding that everyone who comes to enjoy the Rio Olympics 2016 will have a great experience.
First Selectman Tesei said, “I believe the town, residents and commercial property owner (s) need to work together as a team to eliminate sources of standing water on their property. You have the ability to save that person, but your hands are tied”, Frieden wrote recently on the White House blog.
“We’re definitely into the rainy season, and therefore mosquito season”, said Dan Bates, deputy director of Palm Beach County’s Department of Environmental Resources Management. The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week after being bitten by an infected mosquito. The virus seems to cause minor infections in most people but in pregnant women it has been found to cause serious birth defects in their babies.
Researchers made the direct link to the mosquito-borne virus to a birth defect in babies called microcephaly, a condition where infants are born with much smaller than average heads.
He said Zika only lives in the body for a short period of time.
