Weather warning: thunder and localised flooding

Forecasters said thundery showers will bring torrential rain to large swathes of the south-east during the course of today.

“Another day when the June sunshine looks like triggering some heavy and slow-moving downpours”.

It has issued a yellow warning of rain for Cumbria, valid until 9pm.

Some of the showers will also be thundery and there is the potential for localised flooding and travel disruption.

It says 15mm to 20 mm of rain could fall locally within an hour, with 30mm to 40mm possible within a few hours.

In Netherfield, shop keepers were struggling to keep the water from their shop floors and drivers were trudging through inches of water in Victoria Road.

On Tuesday heavy down pours led to three cars becoming completely submerged under a bridge on Wallington High St, with the downpour causing depths of up to two metres in just minutes.
