Maharashtra: Three-storey building collapses in Thane; 11 dead, several feared

At least seven people have died after a building collapsed near India’s western city of Mumbai, police say. “We can’t tell you how long it will take because at this point, we’re assuming that every person trapped underneath the debris is alive”, said NDRF official Sachidanand Gawde.

Rescue operations are now underway and a team of the NDRF is at the site.

“Around 2am, I heard a loud noise”.

This is the second major incident of building collapse within a week after a 40-year-old building crashed in Chole village of Thakurli in Kalyan claiming nine lives.

The accident is the latest in a long line of deadly building collapses recently, some of which have highlighted poor construction standards. While some families had left the building, a few others continued to stay there, they added. “The government must urgently conduct a survey of such buildings”, he said.
