Ravens safety Matt Elam to have season-ending biceps surgery

The reports on Monday morning that the Ravens were “not counting” on having Elam on the field this season because of a torn biceps have been followed by one from Ed Werder of ESPN with a Ravens source confirming a full tear of the muscle.

Members of the organization had said they expected more from the 2013 first-round draft pick after a disappointing 2014, when he eventually lost his starting job.

Elam, the 32nd overall pick by the Ravens in the 2013 draft out of Florida, entered camp competing with Will Hill for the starting strong safety position. Other safeties on the Ravens’ roster include Anthony Levine, Brynden Trawick and undrafted rookie Nick Perry. Second-year safety Terrence Brooks remains on the physically unable to perform list while recovering from a knee injury suffered in December. Perhaps his biggest mistake last season, however, was missing a tackle and giving up a touchdown to Danny Amendola in the AFC Divisional round of the playoffs against the New England Patriots.

“I haven’t heard on the MRI yet, but I’m not real optimistic right now”, Ravens coach John Harbaugh said.

Elam registered 127 tackles, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and an interception in his first two seasons.

Free safety Kendrick Lewis said “Matt Elam’s a very good player, a very good guy; the short time that we had to prepare and get ready for this season was cut short, but I’ve seen a guy who works hard, who comes out every day and just shows his work ethic and shows his work to this team”. “I haven’t heard a final word, but it wasn’t very optimistic [Saturday] talking to the doctors”. The Ravens will have to find somebody to fill the void.
