NEW YORK (AP) — “Hamilton”, the hip-hop stage biography of Alexander Hamilton, won the 2016 Tony Award for best new musical, capping an emotional night in which many in the Broadway community rallied to embrace the LGBT community after a shooting at a gay Florida nightclub. Rapper Common, who introduced “Hamilton” at the ceremony, was among the guests.

Hamilton led the awards, taking out 11 awards from 16 nominations, including best musical. Both won for featured roles.

The muskets may have been removed from the scene depicting the Battle of Yorktown that the cast performed during the telecast, but one of Miranda’s main points was not: “Immigrants”, Layfette (Daveed Diggs) says to Hamilton, who answers: “We get the job done”.

Although “Hamilton” is expected to sweep most of its categories, some other big wins are also up for grabs.

Arthur Miller’s A View From The Bridge was given two Tonys, for Best Revival of a Play and for its director Ivo van Hove.
