Shawn Nicholas Diamond, 29, of Maryland, flew to Dallas earlier this week to see his ex-girlfriend.
Smartphone footage from the scene shows a police officer pointing his gun before opening fire, shooting at an unseen individual. He was shot multiple times but refused to stay down, so he was shot again.
“The tactics the officer used were quite appropriate and the patience the officer used to try and calm the suspect down really tells the story”, said the chief.
Officials said one bullet hit an exterior glass wall and the rest hit the suspect. In a social media video played on numerous broadcasters, 5 shots might be heard, followed by a volley of several more. The police officer that fired the shots has been removed from patrol duty pending a review.
“The airport chose to pull everyone back out of the secure area and recheck them for security purposes”, he said.
The shooting occurred around noon. This created enormous lines and the occurrence resulted in issues with air travel schedules at the airport where spending plan carrier Southwest Airlines Co manages 18 of Love Field’s 20 airport gates.
According to tracking service flightaware.com, at least eight flights operated by Southwest and one by Virgin America were diverted to other airports.
An investigator works the scene of an officer-involved shooting which prompted a lockdown at Dallas Love Field airport Friday, June 10, 2016, in Dallas.
By Friday afternoon the shooting caused the delay of almost 100 flights, according to Fox News. They said Transportation Safety Administration officials were estimating it would take five hours to get through security.
One person was taken to a hospital.
There were no reports of injuries to any officers.
A police officer shot and wounded a man on Friday outside a Dallas airport.
“We are now gathering additional details regarding the situation at Dallas Love Field”, Southwest said in a statement.
Witnesses at the airport said that they saw one person being taken away in an ambulance and a black auto at the scene was taped off by police.
Fonseca says police started to approach, including one who had his gun drawn.
Lucinda Fonseca said she witnessed the disturbance and saw blood on Diamond’s hands and shirt.
She says, “I crouched down on the ground”. “I didn’t know where the bullets were going”.
“It was terrifying”, she said. When the police arrived, he had a rock in each hand.
Shots were fired Friday at Dallas Love Field Airport after a man engaged in a domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend allegedly lunged at officers while he had rocks in his hands. Blankenbaker said he believed the man was conscious, but no further details on his condition were available.
“There doesn’t appear to be any other weapon present than the rock”, Dallas Police Assistant Chief Randall Blakenbaker said.
According to KDFW, the incident took place near baggage claim. Another officer is seen on the video brandishing a stun gun but apparently never fired it. A man repeatedly yells “stand down!” and a woman is heard screaming. A woman can be heard screaming. It’s Dallas’s second busiest airport behind Dallas/Forth Worth International Airport.

Beattie said airport police receive specific training to be attentive to suspicious-looking travelers and that the Dallas Police Department provides “crowded-environment training” to all its officers every two years.
