Officials were probing whether the suspect, widely identified as 29-year-old Omar Mateen, a United States citizen of Afghan descent, had radical Islamic “leanings”.

In a message published on the group’s semi-official news agency, Amaq, it described gunman Omar Mateen as a “soldier of the caliphate”, The Telegraph (UK) reported.

Then after a few months he started abusing me physically, very often, and not allowing me to speak to my family, and keeping me hostage from them.

“Everybody was drinking their last sip”, he said. Say a prayer for them.

Sitora Yusufiy was married to Mateen for four months in 2009, though their divorce was not finalized until 2011.

Obama said that an attack “on any American, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation, is an attack on all of us”.

Mateen had “a history with steroids”, she said.

But the group, which has previously been a conduit for Islamic State statements cited only “a source”, leading experts to doubt the claim.

She met Mateen online, and moved up to Florida to be with him.

“What is shocking to me is that the majority of the staff at Ruby Tuesday’s when I worked there were gay. He always smiled and said hello”.

“He had an automatic rifle, so nobody stood a chance”, said Jackie Smith, who saw two friends next to her get shot. Mateen was a security guard at the G4S company, which identifies itself on its website as “the leading global integrated security company”.

Mateen was of Afghan descent, according to media reports. The name of the show references the Durand line, the long-disputed border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

At that point, Mina said, the shooter stopped shooting and retreated to bathroom with hostages. “I don’t think it has anything to do with ISIS”. He also had a son, 3½, according to Mateen’s father.

Some of Seddique Mir Mateen’s shows were taped and later posted on YouTube. “Afghans are the best friends to the U.S.A”.

On Monday morning, city and state officials said Orlando would come back from this tragedy.

“I never expected this”, Rahman said, holding a Koran in his hand as he spoke with reporters. “He was also subject to checks by a U.S. law enforcement agency with no findings reported to G4S”, the statement said.

When asked if the Federal Bureau of Investigation suspected the gunman might have had inclinations toward militant Islam, including a possible sympathy for Islamic State, Ronald Hopper, an assistant Federal Bureau of Investigation agent in charge, told reporters: “We do have suggestions that the individual may have leanings toward that particular ideology”.

The FBI had interviewed him twice: once after investigators became aware of “inflammatory comments” he had made toward coworkers, and once because of an association with Moner Mohammad Abusalha, an American who carried out a suicide bombing in Syria.

“Those interviews turned out to be inconclusive”, Hopper said, “so there was nothing to keep the investigation going”.
