The deadline to apply for the post was June 10.
The BCCI have not revealed the names of the applicants, but said that secretary Ajay Shirke is now conducting a preliminary review of the applications received, with the shortlisted candidates to be reviewed by the cricket advisory panel.
Reflecting on the same, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Shaharyar Khan revealed that the decision to do away with the formula had already been taken, but how it would be dismantled would be decided in the next meeting.
After Ravi Shastri and India’s current chairman of selectors Sandeep Patil, Kumble is the third high-profile applicant for the job, which became vacant after the previous coaching staff’s tenures expired at the end of the World T20.
“At the close of the June 10, 2016, the timeline set for receiving applications for the position of the Head Coach of the Indian cricket team, BCCI has received a total of 57 applications from coaches within India and overseas”, BCCI said in a statement.
Law, a former coach of Bangladesh, and Whatmore, who was sacked by Zimbabwe this month, are among the foreigners suggested in Indian media as possible contenders.
Anil Kumble has mentored IPL franchises Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians in the past. Currently, he is the chairman of the national junior selection committee of the BCCI.
Kumble is India’s leading wicket taker Test and One-Day International cricket.

He has also captained India for a year before retiring and is considered to be a credible voice in Indian cricket circles.
