Swift Playgrounds for iPad announced – Helps everyone learn to code

Apple ended the 2016 WWDC with an inspiring boost directed toward those looking to becoming coders by introducing Swift Playgrounds, a free tool created to make it easier for people to learn code using Apple’s Swift developer language.

How does it work?

Moves like releasing Swift Playgrounds (which will be free when released this fall) demonstrate that Apple is serious about empowering the next generation with programming skills. The interface looks somewhat akin to Codecademy, but it’s far more graphical and playful, which makes sense, given that the target audience is kids. In fact, with this app, Apple seems to be targeting children.

The app features a special keyboard with specific shortcuts, with the goal of making it easier to enter code. Apple wants to bring many more people into coding; this is their solution. “Swift Playgrounds is the only app of its kind that is both easy enough for students and beginners, yet powerful enough to write real code”. Furthermore, Apple will regularly release standalone challenges to help users build up their skills. Children will learn the basics of Swift programming by moving an onscreen character with code, solving puzzles, and achieving goals via a game-like scenario.

The post Apple just launched “the absolute best way to teach everyone to code” appeared first on Business Insider. It’s all pretty straightforward, but that’s the point – right?

Swift Playgrounds will ship this autumn (alongside iOS 10). The free app is already available to test today, however, in developer beta. More kids doing more programming with Swift pushes it to more places.
