Harrowing hours inside Orlando club, then police acted

Shares in G4S fell by more than 5% on Monday after it emerged the gunman who attacked a gay nightclub in Orlando, killing 49 people, was employed by the private security giant. “We didn’t really talk to him a lot, but I remember him saying things about his dad at times”.

“We have cleared the building, and it is with great sadness that I share we have not 20 but 50 casualties in addition to the shooter”, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer told a news briefing, raising the death toll from 20 previously.

Officials identified the Pulse Orlando club shooter as Omar Mateen.

According to police, Mateen acknowledged his support for the Islamic State group during a 911 call to local law enforcement from the nightclub, Orlando FBI chief Ron Hopper said. From the deck of her Boulder home on Monday, Yusufiy continued to recall details about her four-month marriage to Mateen and how her parents were forced to rescue her from the Florida home they once shared.

Mateen’s father, Mir Seddique, told news agencies that his son was upset after seeing men kissing a couple of months ago.

Mateen, 29, the son of Afghan immigrants, was shot and killed by police who stormed the club with armoured cars after a three-hour siege. Orlando’s FBI Special Agent in Charge Paul Wysopal clarified that the 50th person slain was Mateen himself.

Obama said the Orlando shooting, which appeared to have been carried out with guns obtained legally, should also prompt Americans to “think about the risks that we are willing to take by being so lax in how we make very powerful firearms available to people in this country”.

Henson said he used to be a New York City police officer, had worked at the twin towers in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks and retired in March 2002. “I can’t get the pictures out of my head”, Garcia said.

Mateen then emerged from the hole and engaged in a gun battle with officers, who killed him.

Gilroy, a former Fort Pierce police officer, said Mateen frequently made homophobic and racial comments.

Citing a briefing with Comey, NPR’s Carrie Johnson reported that “Mateen was on a watch list when the first investigation of him by the FBI began in May 2013, and taken off of the list when the investigation was closed March 2014”.
