CCTV footage showed one of the victims, 67-year-old Ashwani Anand, running towards a pavement after he spotted the auto hurtling towards him from the wrong side.

He allegedly hit three persons, including two who were out for morning walk, one after another in a stretch less than 1.5 km in Janakpuri, the official said.

Santosh, the vehicle cleaner, is battling for his life. He sped away again, driving in the wrong lane, and then hit 67-year-old Ashwani Anand, a property dealer who also was out for a morning walk with a neighbour.

Rishabh is resident of Janakpuri area and son of a local businessman, police said. Anand was thrown against a vehicle parked by the road and landed about 20 metres behind it. Constable Parvesh, who was close behind Rawat, finally managed to overtake him and blocked the road with his bike. The injured person, Santosh (40), is not in a condition to record his statement, DCP (West) Pushpendra Kumar said.

In another incident, a 32-year-old man was killed when a juvenile ran over him in Delhi’s posh civil lines area on April 4.

The auto, which is registered in his father’s name was also impounded by the police who found liquor bottles inside the vehicle, the official said. “He told police that he was returning from a party and he did not have food there”, one of the victims’ relatives claimed. “I called up the police station and requested for backup”, Parvesh Kumar, the constable who intercepted Rawat said.
