Cestrians with a combined age of 1080 gathered at Chester’s Queen Hotel this weekend, to celebrate Her Majesty’s 90th birthday in style.

Revellers will take to one of London’s most famous thoroughfares today for a street party celebration in honour of the Queen’s 90th birthday.

But the heavy showers, forecast by the Met Office who had issued a yellow rain warning, left many bedraggled and a few guests claimed the promised supply of ponchos ran out.

The Queen wore a grim countenance when she was photographed peering out of the windows at Buckingham Palace as rain lashed the guests outside.

The Duke of Edinburgh, who was 95 on Friday, wrote: “I have to say the older I get the less I appreciate birthdays”.

Party-goers were banned from bringing umbrellas onto the site, with organisers handing out ponchos – 12,500 of which they had ready and waiting.

The Patron’s Lunch will recognise the Queen’s patronage of more than 600 organisations in the United Kingdom and around the Commonwealth.

The hampers will be filled with a range of treats including a can of Pimm’s, a mini pork pie and cupcakes.

The Queen’s Birthday Parade, featuring 1,500 soldiers and 300 horses, was attended by the Queen and the royal family.

Among the well-wishers were actor Sir David Jason, pop star will.i.am and Prince Andrew’s daughters Eugenie and Beatrice, left. “I then asked her about George and she said he was a really lovely little boy”.

People each paid £150 for tickets to the lunch on the Mall and passed through high-security body scanners before taking their seats in the rain at picnic tables set up amid puddles on the road. “It’s so British. We’re going to enjoy ourselves regardless”.

A yellow warning of rain covering an area stretching from the South East to the North West of England has been put in place until 9pm, with those downpours moving slowly eastwards bringing a risk of localised surface flooding.
