Authorities say the death toll has risen to five the day after in an abandoned two-story office building near downtown Los Angeles. Three of those people were rescued from the fire site.
It took 145 firefighters to battle the flames and keep them from spreading to nearby buildings, extinguishing them by shortly after 9 p.m.
Five civilians, all described as unauthorized occupants, were injured, Humphrey said.
More than 140 firefighters were battling the blaze at 2411 West 8th Street at 7:30 p.m.
No information was immediately released about the person who died.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said the fire broke out at the building Monday evening.
That person and one other of the rescued patients were taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
