Berry’s parents and coach talk about his comeback from cancer

Assuming Berry can play immediately, Kansas City could put Berry and Abdullah at the starting safety spots and allow Parker to start on the outside along with Peters, letting Gaines move to his natural position of slot.

The story of him sneaking out on Friday nights to help the equipment guys shine helmets became symbolic of a humble, engaging, intelligent young man who happened to be a terrific football player. Berry will return to a defense that was second in defensive passing yards last year and his presence will make the defense even better.

On Wednesday morning, Berry returned to the practice field with the Chiefs’ rookies, quarterbacks and injured players at the team’s training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Mo., although he did not participate in the entire practice. He said he felt connected to Berry.

“I sat there and we just cried together, but I told him, ‘You’ve got to take this one day at a time”. “What it really comes down to is you’ve got to take it from an individual standpoint….” There are certain foods you can’t eat.

“You sorta feel like the carpet has been pulled out from under you”, said Holtz. It was a battle of me versus me. “You can’t look too far ahead, because I did that at the start and ended up crying to my Dad for about 30 minutes”.

Berry was cleared by the Kansas City medical staff and his own doctors after a battery of tests Tuesday. My whole thing was that it’s going to be what it’s going to be. “The two things I could control is my attitude and my effort”. For Eric Berry this is a huge step, as doctors now say he is cancer free. But getting back to that point wasn’t easy, especially trying to train while undergoing chemotherapy.

“It was definitely a tough battle”, Berry said, “but sometimes you’ve got to go through it”.

“I’ve been able to talk to him throughout the stages, so I know how hard it was to get back to this point”. Then, he resolved to beat cancer. He had his treatments in Atlanta, where he was surrounded by a strong support group.

Berry has made three Pro Bowls during his short career and was named first-team All-Pro in 2013. If you want to be sad, be sad.

That was victory No. 1.

“Just because it’s a cloudy day does not mean the sun is not shining”, Berry said. His path to recovery was smoother than most, rougher than some, and an inspiration to children and professional football stars and everyone in between.

“Obviously, that’s what we all want to see”, Reid said.

Berry has remained largely positive from the beginning with the goal of returning to football as soon as possible. And coach and I will work day in and day out with what he can (do). “This is just a checkpoint”. “I’ve come a long way”.

His goal while enduring six months of chemotherapy was to do five push-ups a day.
