The shooting happened during a vigil two blocks away for someone drowned past year in Salinas, police said.

It remains unclear if the shooting and the vigil are related.
Police in Oakland, California, say a 16-year-old girl has died after being shot in the city’s downtown area, where another three people were wounded.
Mason Stone, 39, said he was walking about a block away when he heard gunshots in rapid succession just after 5:40 p.m. The other victims were listed as in stable condition; a police officer told the Los Angeles Times that their ages had a “wide range”.

“And then basically there were people running every which way”, he told the newspaper, saying he ducked behind a vehicle until the gunfire ended.
Banecapital Askew, 35, said she saw one person lying in the street, one man shot in his hand, and another man shot between his thigh and stomach.
“The really scary thing, coming on the heels of the shooting in Orlando, you wonder is it gang-related or is it a insane gunman”, Stone said.

A security guard at Venue, Oscar Edwards, said he was inside when the shooting occurred and shocked at the timing and location. Downtown is one of the safest places now.
