France releases Euro 2016 terrorist attack alert app

The alerts will bring in brief descriptions of what has happened and advice on how they can stay safe.

As football fans from across the continent descend on the country for the quadrennial Euro 2016 football tournament, which kicks off tomorrow, the interior ministry yesterday launched the free app, which will send a warning ‘in case of a suspected attack. Because it’s an official government project, users can rely on the app for information rather than turning to social media where potentially false information could spread.

Fans travelling to France for Euro 2016 can download the app – called SAIP (‘alert and information system for the population’) – in both French and English from the Apple iTunes stores and Google Play.

The app alerts users to scenarios like a shooting or bombing, but also includes other information.

The government body added: “Stadiums, fan zones, venues broadcasting the tournament and transport hubs and links represent potential targets for terrorist attacks”.

The “security alert” application called #SAIP will give information in French and English and is created to give a warning to users around 15 minutes after a confirmed threat.

The U, K. foreign office warns British citizens travelling to Euro 2016 that there is now a high threat of terrorism in France.

There is also the threat of a terror attack, less than seven months after an attack in Paris left 130 dead.
