On Monday, Modi was greeted at the airport by local members of the Indian community, laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Space Shuttle Columbia Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. Modi will also address the joint meeting of US Congress.

Last month, Modi met with Apple CEO Tim Cook, one of many US tech chiefs who have visited India recently to increase business opportunities in a country with a vast consumer market.

Modi will also address the 40th annual general meeting of the US India Business Council and meet USA business leaders. This is the Prime Minister’s fourth visit to the US.

He said India would like to keep the US market open to its exports. For the protection of AP and its licensors, content may not be copied, altered or redistributed in any form. Please see our terms of service for more information.

India and USA are the largest democracies in the world.

There are the gushing comments: Modi “transcends the ancient and the modern”, Obama wrote in Time magazine. Congressmen themselves wrote to the Speaker (of the House of Representatives) to invite Modi to address the joint session of the Congress.

“There is a very detailed and advanced negotiation”, Arun Singh, India’s Ambassador to the United States, said.

Modi later said, “I am thankful for the help and support that my friend President Obama has extended with regard to membership in MTCR and NSG”.

Obama praised Modi in April for laying out “an ambitious vision to reduce extreme poverty, improve education, empower women and girls and unleash India’s true economic potential while confronting climate change”. “We discussed back in December in Paris that India was going to play an important role in making important commitments to this agreement that would ensure that the world came together to confront this challenge”, the presidential spokesman said.

-Modi is likely to meet members from both the Democratic and Republican parties, as well as members of the teams of all major presidential hopefuls. “I do not want to miss it”, said MR Rangaswami, a Silicon Valley-based successful investor and entrepreneur, who is flying from California to attend Modi’s event on Capitol Hill.

Modi arrived in Switzerland from Qatar on Sunday night on the third leg of his five-nation tour.

Modi said India and Switzerland also share a commitment to reform worldwide institutions in line with current global realities.

Referring to the Climate Change summit in Paris in December previous year, he said the joining of forces between India and United States helped forge the historical agreement to effectively deal with climate change.

The U.S., India and dozens of other countries have already signed the deal, the first hurdle in a two-step process, but Modi has been coy about whether India would formally join this year.
