AT&T Expands Wi-Fi Calling to Select Android Devices

LG G4 Wi-Fi calling on AT&T goes live starting today.

Once the feature has been set up and the smartphone connects to a Wi-Fi work, it automatically detects when to route the call over the Wi-Fi network, it’s going to do that when there’s limited or no cell coverage.

The service – which allows users to make and receive calls and text over Wi-Fi – will initially be available on just the LG G4, but will “soon” become available on other Android devices, AT&T said.

If you’ve got an AT&T LG G4, you should receive a notification when it’s available on your device. Calls and texts can be made as normal, no separate app needed, over Wi-Fi.

After launching the feature for iOS devices late previous year, AT&T is finally bringing Wi-Fi calling to Android starting today. Aside from a compatible phone, you’ll need to be connected to a decently strong Wi-Fi network with consistent throughput, and have a postpaid plan provisioned for HD Voice, which leaves data-only and prepaid users out in the cold.

The firm has offered Wi-Fi calling to iPhones since October (and even earlier if you were running the iOS 9 beta). For instance, making a call on your US number to another USA number is free of charge, even if you are overseas.
