Major League Baseball announced that all 30 Clubs will participate in the return of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge this August.

Tomorrow, Friday, July 31, MLB, the Boston Red Sox and representatives of several ALS organizations including The ALS Association join co-founders Pete Frates and Pat Quinn at Fenway Park in Boston to launch this year’s global social media effort to raise awareness and funds to put an end to this cruel disease.

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects neurons (nerve cells) in the brain and the spinal cord. It can lead to muscle weakness, lose of the use of arms and legs and difficulty breathing, speaking and swallowing.

Last year, the province’s ALS Society received nearly $2.7 million in donations from almost 79,000 people, in large part due to the spotlight the challenge put on the disease.

Gosnell, 47, a Hanover resident who started the company 28 years ago, was diagnosed with ALS in May, said company president Steven Rose.

The Red Sox teamed up with Pete Frates to relaunch the ALS Ice Bucket challenge Friday with the help of Major League Baseball.

“We used to have to explain what [ALS] was; People referred to it as Lou Gehrig’s disease”. It does so by funding worldwide research to find treatments and cures; by providing comprehensive health care services and support to MDA families nationwide; and by rallying communities to fight back through advocacy, fundraising and local engagement.
