Cabrera lifts Rays over BoSox to avoid sweep

Former Portland Sea Dogs’ first baseman Travis Shaw played the best game of his short Major League career on Saturday, belting two home runs and finishing a triple shy of the cycle in Boston’s 11-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park.

“Didn’t hit it as hard as you’d like, but it fell in, and that was good for us”, Loney said. Lucchino, one of the lead members of the group that bought the PawSox earlier this year, held executive roles with the Baltimore Orioles and San Diego Padres before becoming part of the current Red Sox ownership.

The Rays crept back with two runs in both the fourth and fifth.

They left the bases loaded in the seventh before coming up with the go-ahead rally.

Larry Lucchino, a baseball franchise-builder in three cities who oversaw three World Series titles in his tenure with the Boston Red Sox, is stepping down as team president and CEOat the end of the year, when his contract expires, a club spokesman confirmed. Brad Boxberger, the fourth reliever, struck out the final three batters for his 26th save.

Riding a three-game win streak, the Red Sox could not quite complete the three-game sweep of the Tampa Bays, as the bullpen blew the game one inning after the bullpen saved it. Evan Longoria began the inning with a double off Junichi Tazawa before Cabrera followed up with a ground-rule double to score him.

Andrew Heaney (5-1) was charged with two runs and four hits in 5 1-3 innings.

Kelly (3-6) gave up only one hit through three innings, but the right-hander departed after giving up five runs and nine hits and striking out six in five-plus innings for Boston.

“I love to watch the outfield before the pitcher throws the ball to see where they’re playing when you’re in that situation”, Cabrera said.

Moore has served up four or more runs in five of six starts since making his season debut on July 2 after a lengthy recovery from Tommy John surgery.

“The first time through was pretty good”, Kelly said. The only runs the Sox could put on the board was thanks to Mike Napoli; an RBI double and a solo homerun.

But Bogaerts’ RBI single made it 7-4. He soon came around to score on Cabrera’s one-out RBI double to deep right. He hit Curt Casali with a pitch and then walked Brandon Guyer to load the bases with two outs.

Rays: Steven Souza Jr. was hit by a fastball by Kelly and left in the sixth with a bruised left hand. Manager Kevin Cash said he’s expected to miss 4 to 6 weeks.

Red Sox: Placed struggling RHP Rick Porcello on the 15-day DL with soreness in his right triceps…. Red Sox 3B Pablo Sandoval (left forearm contusion) was available off the bench.
