Thousands of people were ordered out of their homes Monday after wind-whipped wildfires burned dozens of buildings across northern California. The fire almost tripled in size over the weekend to 84 square miles.
However, no homes were lost on Sunday, state fire spokesman Jay Smith said. Several roads have been closed.
In the Sequoia National Forest, firefighters reported that rain had helped them establish fire lines against expected growth of the Cabin Fire, which has burned 2,600 acres since mid-July. “It’s just insane”, Nikki Shatter of Clear Lake told KCAL-TV. “Even with a little bit cooler temperatures and higher humidities, look at what we have right now”. Now, the fire is still just 12 percent contained after burning 62,000 acres and destroying 24 homes.
There also has been a human toll from the wildfires.
As wildfires continue to blaze across California, one fire is more expansive in its reach than others. The largest California wildfire is raging in the Lower Lake area north of San Francisco, the Associated Press reports.
The crew will be working in northern California, where Gov. Jerry Brown has declared state of emergency because of extensive and severe fires.
Ruhl disappeared on Thursday night during the initial operations to contain the Frog Fire, in the Modoc National Forest.
Camp said additional fire crews were going to be brought in to fight the blaze. His body was recovered on Friday, according to Sandusky.
“Firefighter Ruhl will be remembered for his service and bravery and we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues with the U.S. Forest Service”, Brown said in a separate statement.
The 5,700-acre Willow Fire was 70% contained Monday, and an evacuation order for some residents was being lifted.
Three firefighters who were burned while fighting a fire northeast of Sacramento have been released from the hospital.
He said the fire ravaged through the forests at break-neck speed, with firefighters struggling to keep apace.
Trinity county, near the Oregon border, now is the site of two of the state’s most extensive fires. The 3 ½-square-mile blaze is 85 percent contained.
On Saturday, the fire was ravaging some 20,000 acres, spreading to 54,000 by Sunday, affecting the counties of Lake, Yolo and Colusa.
Numerous California blazes were sparked by lightning.

They said the biggest single factor has been the extremely desiccated condition of the thick chaparral and scrub oak fueling the fire, a natural tinder box created by four years of drought and stoked by gusty winds.
