Nats outlast Cubs in 12 innings

Well it didn’t actually. Lots of standing. It had close games, good pitching, grind-it-out rallies, late-game drama, chess matches, the hearts of both lineups batting in the ninth inning, and questionable managing decisions that will likely be debated over local if not national airwaves for days to come.

Tony Sipp (1-2) got the last out of the seventh in relief of Collin McHugh, Carlos Correa’s two-run single off Trevor Rosenthal made it a three-run lead in the ninth and Will Harris finished for his fifth save in as many chances. Tanner Roark (5-4, 2.93) gets the start for the Nats opposite Padres right-hander Erik Johnson (0-1, 9.64).

Adam Warren came in the 12th inning to relieve Cahill and gave up a base hit to Jayson Werth which scored Taylor to win the game for the Nationals (41-25), 5-4. After Ramos led off the Washington second with a single, Hammel retired 13 straight.

Strasburg: 7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 Ks, 1 HR, 105 P, 67 S.

Jason Hammel, however, took the mound carrying some perfection of his own: a 9-0 record facing the Nationals over a decade-long career.

Dodgers 3, D’backs 2 • Clayton Kershaw won his 10th game and native St. Louisan Scott Van Slyke hit his first home run of the season to boost visiting Los Angeles.

Matt Belisle entered the game in the ninth for the Nationals and gave up a leadoff double to Kris Bryant. Rizzo put the Cubs ahead a half-inning later with a two-run shot off left-hander Oliver Perez.

That’s how it end- not so fast.

ROCKIES 6, YANKEES 3: Nolan Arenado tied for the major league lead with his 20th homer and drove in three runs as host Colorado swept a two-game series and sent NY to a fourth straight loss.

The Cubs took the lead again in the 12 when rookie Albert Almora Jr. led off with a single and eventually scored from second on Addison Russell’s one-out single.

Classic. Jayson Werth, ladies and gentlemen. “I’m a lot better when I have fastball command and I can be more efficient that way”.

Washington lost last night, but they still had wins in four of their last five, seven of their last nine and 11 of their last 15 overall.

At this rate, Strasburg could be in line to start the All-Star Game.

Prior to the season, there were some who wondered what Werth, now 37-years-old, had left in the tank. There’s no need to panic, but he’s been the most reliable bullpen option throughout the year and the Cubs can ill afford to have him continually struggle to lock down one run games. He ended his outing by getting Anthony Rendon to ground out with a runner on third. That leads the Nationals.

Daniel Murphy started the day leading the majors in AVG (.361).
