Donate blood in final weeks of summer

Blood donations do tend to decline during the summer months as people become busy with travel and vacations. “Whole blood donors can give as many as six times a year, but double red donors can only give blood three times a year”.

“Donating blood only takes one hour, and by giving that extra time, donors make an extraordinary impact on the lives of those who need blood”, she said. Those types of donations are often needed by cancer patients, surgical patients and bone marrow recipients. Types B negative and A negative can be transfused to Rh-positive or Rh-negative patients.

The Red Cross says seniors should also have someone they can call if the heat becomes too much.

The Red Cross urges all eligible donors to make a life-saving donation, by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS to find out about nearby blood drives, and to schedule an appointment.
