Authorities say an 80-year-old man killed an 81-year-old man in a Rhode Island cemetery, then led police on a auto chase before officers fatally shot him.

Police said after the chase ended they used deadly force on the suspect.

Police say gunfire was exchanged before the suspect was shot by officers. “It was ‘boom, boom, boom, boom, ‘” resident Shelley Carreiro said.

After police were called to the incident at about 7pm on Monday, Acquisto fled the scene but was later tracked down by police to residential neighbourhood. Acquisto led authorities past the cemetery and onto Ford Farm Road, a dead-end street. He was then observed by Fall River police and drove back into Tiverton where he stopped on Ford Farm Road.

The loud pops sounded like fireworks, witnesses told the newspaper, or maybe even like they came from a roofing nail gun.

“Because a death is involved, our practice is to present this matter to a grand jury at some point in the future once the investigation is completed”, said Gerard Coyne, Deputy Rhode Island Attorney General. It’s unclear if there’s a relationship between the two men. It was pre-arranged. He was given a life sentence in the 1979 rape of an ex-girlfriend, reported the newspaper, but was paroled in 2003. Charges were dismissed for lack of a speedy trial, according to the newspaper, and after being in a coma for 12 years, the victim died.
