Investigators casting wide net in nightclub shooting probe

“I really don’t know what the motive was behind his act and I didn’t know he was so aggressive and angry about gays”, Mateen said.

Qais Munhazim woke up on Sunday to reports that an Afghan-American gunman had rampaged through a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in an attack apparently motivated by support for militant Islamist groups.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – The murky picture of Orlando gunman Omar Mateen grew more complex Tuesday with word that the FBI is investigating whether he had been a regular at the gay dance club he attacked and had been leading a secret life as a gay man. CAIR said its statement was on behalf of “The Muslims of New Jersey (who) have come together to issue a joint statement of solidarity with their fellow Americans in condemning the disgusting mass shooting at a nightclub in Orlando on Sunday”. It pains us to see that these periods of joy, celebration, and peace have been marred so violently with such horror.

A spokesman for Awad played down the director’s remarks as nothing new.

The shootings and killings in Orlando seem to beg more questions than answers. “How about we say that these Islamic time bombs, who live among us, must be rooted out”, Healy wrote.

“The fact that this was perpetrated by someone with a Muslim name, that Islam is drawn into it and considering the stigmatization and marginalization of Muslims in America, in media and certain political spheres.it leaves LGBTIQ Muslims sometimes in a precarious place”, said El-Farouk Khaki, a gay activist and co-founder of the Toronto Unity Mosque. He said he hoped for some real soul-searching beyond expressions of solidarity toward fully integrating gays and lesbians into Muslim life.

Munhazim’s experience illustrates the isolation some Muslims in the LGBT community in the United States are feeling.

“These are some of the bravest toughest men I know”, Mina said. Don’t let this hate-filled man overshadow the lessons that Ali taught us; that love and compassion can overcome hate and bigotry.

It lacks neighborhoods like Molenbeek in Brussels and the poor suburbs of Paris, Marseille and Toulouse, where young Muslims grow up, disconnected from the wider society, and radical imams preach without being disturbed. “I was afraid of people, how they would react. And we have to decide if that’s the kind of country we want to be”.

Investigators have spoken extensively with Salman and are working to establish whether she and Mateen were recently at or inside the club, said an official who was not authorized to discuss the case publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The second largest religion in the world, and the fastest growing, is Islam, with 1.6 billion members. But over the years, Kugle has noted a growing openness in the US and elsewhere to discussing the topic.

The Duke Islamic Studies Center is in the midst of a year-long project examining Islam and sexuality, including same-sex relationships, part of a wider scholarly re-examination of Muslim teachings on the subject, according to Safi.

Too numerous fusion centers haven’t meaningfully detected terrorists or plots, so federal resources need to be used more effectively, as there is too much redundancy across the country.

“Radical ideology of whatever form that leads to hatred is bad”, said Elizabeth Esty, D-5th District.

“It’s appears he was organized and well-prepared”, the chief said, adding that the shooter had an assault-type weapon, a handgun and “some type of (other) device on him”. Those in his mosque said he attended prayer services in Fort Pierce 3 to 4 times a week.

“We make it very easy for individuals who are troubled or disturbed.to get very powerful weapons”, he said in the Oval Office.

Alam, who travels the country speaking to college students about being gay and Muslim, said coming out is still “an incredibly risky proposition” for many. The control of territory gives the organization a specific ability to bring in fighters, train and equip them and send them back out to execute attacks, the official said. We can and might look closely at all Muslims, ban new sales of military-style rifles, teach the evils of intolerance and violence with more passion, pour money into mental health diagnosis on a mass scale or turn the nation into a spy state in which all suspect activity is reported to a central authority. As the LGBTQ community today mourns the loss of innocent men and women, I mourn with them.
